I'm in the middle of packing and moving my family so things are a bit hectic with that and regular work. Logo Contest

We're having a blast telling the story of SCATTERWOOD.

Yup, you read right. We finally decided on a name for our little tale. While we're putting together the proper webcomic style site, we need to get a logo for our adventure. We thought it would be fun to get you all involved and be apart of our story by helping us create the logo for SCATTERWOOD. So, all you designers out there, fire up your creative engine and get to work.

If you're logo is chosen you will win an original piece of art by both Scott Morse and myself as well as have your name up in lights... well, ok, you'll get your name on the credits page of the site and the book whenever we publish it. haha.

Here's the things to keep in mind when designing your log

-Fantasy/Magical/Adventure

-Animals

-Wood, oak, nature, etc.

-Readability

-Awesomeness

-Must look good on a site AND a book.
-Needs to be in color

I'm posting my page a day early since I'll be gone for the weekend. Hope you don't mind :)

We've barely started this experiment and I'm already having more fun than I could have imagined. And the excitement we've see from you all after one page just makes me feel all fuzzy in side. Thanks for taking this ride with us.

Scott and I started SkottieScott with an email like this

Scott: "Those 2 warm-ups you did were great, we should start a blog together and do that everyday."
Me: "Word."
Scott: "Maybe we'll even try to sell them each day."
Me: "Word!"

And a few days later we had SkottieScott up and running and we hard daily for about 5 months. It was fun but Scott and I knew that we were storytellers and that just doing images of Batman and the Muppets was starting to get a bit boring. We wanted to get excited again. We started discussing doing a book one day in those first few emails. After taking our break from SDCC and Trickster, I emailed Scott like

Me: "Hey, I'm getting bored of doing established characters only, everyday."
Scott: "Word."
Me: "Let's tell a story. You do a page, I'll react to that on my page and we'll try to tell a long form story out of nothing."
Scott: "Word!"

Again, the plan was as simple as that. Scott liked the idea of animals, fantasy and adventure. He knows me well, so I agreed quick. He suggested that we each create a character and so we went away and Asher and Spittle were born. Outside of that, nothing was set in place. We'll do our best to tell a seamless story with 2 different artists and no plan. We didn't even give it a name yet. We decided to let the story start first and see where it led us and if that would inform the name instead the title directing us towards a story.

We're not the first do this, and as a fan of storytelling I hope we're not the last. But we're going to have fun and we hope you all enjoy the ride. I'm working on proper webcomic site and that will launch in a few weeks, but until then you can follow along here on the blog.

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS!

Welcome to the Big Experiment...here, twice weekly, you'll thrill to the ongoing exploits of Asher and Spittle in their yet-to-be-officially-titled comic by Scott Morse and Skottie Young. We've decided to make a departure here at SkottieScott from the re-imagined character designs you've come to know and love. Instead, we're opting to CREATE. We're opting to OWN. We're opting to contribute to the entertainment spectrum with something original and hopefully a load of fun for everyone. It is for us, anyhow.

Periodically you'll find accompanying anecdotes about the creation of the story and characters, but mostly you'll find the story pages themselves. We're creating these one page at a time with no outline to work from: we're shooting from the hip. This could backfire and destroy comics and the internet itself... or succeed and make the internet a better place and comics the medium of choice for storytellers. Or at the very least make you smile twice weekly.

Asher is Skottie's creation, Spittle is Scott's creation. The rest is a joint effort written and drawn as we see each other's work just days before you do.

Scott's pages will be updated every Monday while Skottie updates his every Friday. So you'll start and end each week with new piece of the adventure.

Oh, and soon you'll see the look of SkottieScott evolve to better suit the comics format we're shooting for. Don't be scared. It's for your own good.

The most epic adventure...

It's almost time. SkottieScott is about to launch the next phase of comics evolution right here...at least OUR comics evolution. Or revolution, based on our revelation that we need to stop screwing around and make some comics.

Skottie and I began a dialogue about this some time ago and the plan had always been to evolve the SkottieScott blog into something with more impact. You'll see some changes around here soon...a new look based around an easy-to-navigate main feature: our first joint comic project.

We're shooting from the hip, folks. One page at a time, one character at a time. We're drawing in a style we WANT to draw in, drawing a sort of story you wouldn't see anywhere else. Action, fantasy, adventure, suspense, and most importantly, funny with the words.

Here's a sneak peek at some of the evolution so far: After some lengthy conversations on what we're hoping to achieve, I started some "idea panels" to evoke story without a story. Just the flavor of what we might like. Skottie hit me back with our first solid character, and then I added my first solid character. We've got our leads, our dynamic duo, our Laurel and Hardy, our Artoo and Threepio. They're going to be in the middle of craziness from page one.

Try to keep up, people.

We here at SkottieScott are thrilled to embark on a new adventure in storytelling: a new, transparent method of storytelling that will expose the working process and enlighten readers! We have a strong vision and endeavor to set fire to the creative fuel flowing through our veins. We have a self-styled mission to reclaim the inspired collaborative process and let sequential entertainment explode on your screen.

We're going to make a comic. Right here.

Prepare for hijinx as we switch off back and forth with the creative process. You'll thrill to the weekly adventures of two comics storytellers pulling out their sharpened artistic machetes and hacking their way through unknown worlds, lands filled with fantasy and adventure and humor and style. Lands we own, lands we control. Lands we're excited to share with you as we discover them ourselves.

That means we'll be taking a break from warm-up drawings of corporate characters. We want to connect more strongly with what we're doing and invest ourselves--our time and energy and creative spirit--in something hopefully more pure and lasting.

Stay tuned. SKOTTIESCOTT will blow your minds shortly. Or at least serve up something different.

Hey everyone. Nintendo week is way too fun for me to do with out Scott so I'm putting it on pause. Hell, I may redo the ones I've done so far!!

SDCC is coming up in less than a month and that means TRICKSTER is as well. What this also means is that our daily sketch blog might be taking a bit of hit on the consistency front until after the show. We have A LOT of work to for the show and that's on top of our daily work. So we may be in an out for the next month. But after July, we'll be back in full swing.

After traveling from me and a little jury duty for Scott, we're finally back. And what better way to return than with one of the most classic children's stories of all time. ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

Let's kick things off with White Rabbit. I had a lot of fun with this little doodle. As much as I enjoy the brush, I've started to fall back in love with just dead lined pens. There's something frantic about it that really speaks to me. I think after years of inking with a brush, I've actually become more confident with all tools so I'm a little more brave when it comes to reaching out there for lines. I'm going to stick to all pen this week for Alice.

I've always loved the Muppets would mix with the current pop culture of the time. So today I couldn't resist adding the Muppets resident stand-up comedian to the podcasting clutches of W.T.F. 's Marc Maron. This is probably what it would like like if Fozzie stopped by the cat ranch and had a chat with Marc.

I loved the these two and the crazy experiments Bunsen would subject Beaker to. These characters are hard to make your own. The Henson Company really boiled each character down to it's essence thru shape which is what we try to do as cartoonists. They nailed it and it's hard to think I can do better without changing the characters. So I'm ok with playing in the sandbox they gave us.

All proceeds from both Scott and I this week will donated to help aid the victims of the tornado in the Joplin, MO area.

Let me start by saying that I will be getting a Grinch piece in sometime soon. I'm on the last week of my 8 issue run on Ozma of Oz so I'm in the homestretch of deadlines.

That said, we're reaching back to one of the shows that was a staple around my house... The Muppet Show. I think Henson defined my idea of imagination starting with the Muppet Show and branching out into the amazing movies. We'll kick things off with GONZO!! The chicken loving, horn blowing blue... thing. haha.

Hey loyal followers of SKOTTIESCOTT! A couple of quick things:

By now all of you keen-eyed folks out there have probably seen that we're planning the launch of TR!CKSTER, a new way of promoting creator-owned work and endeavors. It's equal parts retail space, gallery, and symposia. These symposia are focused, intense workshops designed for people interested in HOW we work and WHY we do what we do, creator-owend style. We feel that, from up and comers to seasoned professionals, everyone should continue to learn and be open to new ways of thinking and the symposia are for just that.

Skottie and I are offering a very special symposia: SKOTTIESCOTT: LIVE. We'll be focusing on character design for different types of storytelling and content: why you'd use certain shape or line quality in different situations to establish tone, weight, and acting. We'll focus on the concept of storytelling in a single illustration, what that means, and how it can inform every panel of a comic. We'll deal with style vs. substance and how to develop a unique voice in your drawings.

The Symposia are ticketed affairs and will be offered for a fee, online, very soon at TR!CKSTER's website. They'll be VERY LIMITED SEATING to maintain this unique workshop atmosphere.

We'd like to thank you all for patiently waiting out a week off here on the blog. Skottie and I get a little crazy with making books, movies, and mayhem and sometimes need to step back and breathe. But we'll be back!

Horton is such a great little tale and this is one of the strongest moments Dr. Seuss ever gave me. For any of you in the comic book business you know that this is how it feels most days. Trying to find your flower in a field of a million flowers. It's a ton of work but when you find it you feel like you've conquered the world.

On the art side I always admired Seuss for his ability to have such strong visuals with the use of black, white and just a few select flat colors.

All of Teddy Geisel's creations hold a special place for me, but some of them more than others. My mentor Maurice Noble knew Geisel really well and designed many of his animated productions, including the Lorax, Horton Hears a Who, and of course How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Maurice really liked the Lorax, though, because of its message.

Ok, so Scott and I agreed that after 4 straight weeks of Star Wars that we were getting a bit burnt out. The whole point for these warm ups is to get the juices flowing and start the creative process for the day. Feeling zapped defeats it. So we're pushing Return of the Jedi off for another time. We WILL do it, we're just going to move on to some other things for now.

Dr. Suess was a subject I was excited to get to. It's also a challenge because I feel that my style isn't light years away from his so putting my won twist on these classics will interesting.

Cat in the Hat. I always wanted to see him be a bit more evil looking since he really was quite a ***hole! So I gave him a bit more of a menacing look while causing his havoc.

We're entering out 3rd week of Star Wars sketches and that means we've made it to Empire Strikes Back. We're kicking off with the Wampa. This character scared me as a kid but I LOVED the toy. I was so mad one day when I realized I left him standing on top of an old stove type heater we had in our old house. I caught it quick enough that only part of one of his feet had melted. But I was still mad as hell.

Ok, it's the Vader kid from the car ad. I couldn't help myself. That commercial is so funny and cute. I figured we'll have a few more Vader days thru out the rest of the 4 weeks that I could get away with one day of reaching into modern pop culture and having some fun.

I got a few requests to see the sketch before I take inks to it so I may start showing those from time to time. I basically just do a quick 10-15 minute rough digitally in SketchBook Pro and then print that out in light blue and ink over it.

I spend hours just flipping thru pages of art books, comics, etc. just to study and soak in as much art as possible. It's like if I keep looking long enough it will just absorb into my brain and I'll have it all figured out. That's why I imagine Chewie does with all that time spent flying between jobs. Just studying the Holochess board and hoping that he'll magically be the best at it some day.

I've been having fun with adding a bit of photoshop to the sketches after and from time to time I will still do it. But for now, I'm going to be sticking to more straight up black and white sketches. Trying to push myself to not rely on color to finish these off. We'll see what happens.

The Stormtrooper toys were always my favorite. I cant' really pinpoint why. I think I liked any figure from Star Wars that had a helmet. They all looked so menacing, even though in the movies they're pretty much the most incompetent force ever. Any one of any size could pull one over on them or just straight up kill them.

Instead of doing a scene that we know, I thought I'd play with an idea outside of one of the scenes. Today's subject was the Cantina Band. I couldn't help but start thinking of the small town, country boy who wants to make it as a musician and stands out in the desert waiting for the Speeder Bus to take him into the city where he'll play for peanuts just to get noticed. Even the Cantina Band started somewhere.

It had to happen. SkottieScott is entering into a epic 6 WEEK long journey thru the classic Star Wars Trilogy. We'll be giving 2 weeks to each of the original episodes A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. There is just too much material to try and cover it one week. So, buckle up and and let's do this.

We're kicking things off with the Jawas. I love these little guys. I'm also a HUGE fan of playing with negative space. There's something very cool about using hardly any of the actual space but it still feeling full and right. So fun.

Yep. The big guy kicks butt on every level. The progress shots I posted in real time on Twitter are below so you can see the evolution of the painting. Took about 45 minutes, I guess. He's big and more detailed than a regular"sketch, but this is still an indicator of how I work, just pushing paint around and finding it as I go.
