Skottie: Hellboy

This may sound odd, but my favorite parts of Hellboy are when he's just wandering through the lands. I love journey tales and there's something powerful to me about the search for where ever you are going. So, I left the action behind and just focused on the walk.

Ink and water color on 9x11.5 watercolor paper

  1. Fantastic! Do you do the watercolor washes first before inking or the other way around?

  4. Sweet!

This reminds me of E.H. Shepard's Winnie the Pooh illustrations.

  5. Once, at a convention, I asked Mignola if he minded up and coming artists creating Hellboy art and then selling it at shows or if he thought it was flattering that Hellboy is like the new Wolverine or Spidey (in that artists fill their portfolio with these characters). Surprisingly, he did not say if he was flattered or not. He just mentioned that he thought it was a form of stealing. That wasn't really the answer I was anticipating. I then proceeded to buy a print of Hellboy by some young artist. I took the print over to Mignola to have him sign it, but then when I reached him in line I thought better of it.

    Anyway, nice piece Scottie.

  6. That's my favorite part too. I feel like the anticipation of getting to the monster or client was the best part. It's the same as Samurai Jack, where the silence and pace make you even more eager for the action, in a good way.
